The drive
Volubilis lies about thirty kilometres north of Meknes; allow around forty minutes’ drive depending on traffic. Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is right next to it: the two visits are easy to combine in a single day.
The road is paved: a city car such as the Peugeot 208, the Hyundai i10 or the Dacia Sandero is perfectly suitable.
Volubilis, the ancient city
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Volubilis is one of the best-preserved ancient sites in Morocco. You walk among the remains of a Roman town: the triumphal arch, the basilica, the capitol and many houses whose floors have kept their mosaics.
Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, the holy town
Clinging to the Zerhoun hills, the small town of Moulay Idriss is home to the mausoleum of Moulay Idriss I, founder of the first Moroccan dynasty. Climb to the upper part of town for the view over its white houses and the valley.
Our practical tips
- Set off early in the morning, especially in summer: the Volubilis site offers little shade.
- Bring water, a hat and good shoes.
- Check the site’s opening hours and entrance fees on the spot.
- Park in the designated car parks and leave nothing visible in the car.
